Q - How long are virtual courses?
A - First-time credit courses, on average, are approximately 50-75 hours in length, while credit recovery courses may be shorter if the student can show mastery in the content. Most courses are designed to be completed in 9-14 weeks.
Q - What happens after I have completed the OPS Virtual Learning Request form?
A - The Virtual School Coordinator will send an email acknowledging student enrollment. From there, the application will be reviewed by your child’s counselor, who will make the appropriate course recommendations to the Virtual Schools Coordinator. If the counselor has questions, you will be contacted directly. The student should receive an enrollment email that contains all login information, rules, and information regarding virtual courses.
Q - Can virtual students participate in school activities?
A - Yes; virtual students can participate in school activities. Virtual students must still meet all eligibility requirements for the school and state. Some school activities may require that the student be enrolled in that activity during the school day. It is best to speak to the activity sponsor or teacher/coach for specific program rules, as they may vary between activities.
Q - What school supplies are needed?
A - The virtual curriculum uses video-based lessons. Assignments can be accomplished using a device such as a Chromebook or laptop and materials around the house; therefore, additional supplies are not needed.
Q - How does eligibility work for virtual students?
A - Student grades are entered by the teacher of record into PowerSchool. The teacher of record will enter them once per week.
Q - Are there due dates for assignments and content within Edgenuity, or can the student work at their own pace without penalty?
A - Edgenuity assigns due dates for all content based on the start and end dates for the course. It is important for students to be “on target” with their course due dates because Edgenuity will temporarily penalize students for work that has not been completed by the due date. This penalty is automatically removed when the student completes the assignment. There is no penalty for late work, like there could be in a traditional classroom.
Q - Will students who are online be doing the same work as students in the classroom?
A - Students will be working on the same Oklahoma Academic Standards as their peers in the face-to-face classroom; however, lessons will not be identical.
Q - Can my student work ahead and finish the course early?
A - Absolutely! It is encouraged that students work ahead of schedule in case they are unable to work from time to time. There is no penalty for working ahead or if they finish a course early.
Q - If my student finishes their course early, can they have another course added?
A - No, students are offered a full course schedule. Additional courses may be taken at the High School level via Night School, Summer School, or another approved program (speak to your counselor for details).
Q - Who will be the student’s teacher for their online course?
A - We utilize our own teachers within the district to support Edgenuity classes. These teachers are certified in the core area of the courses they oversee.
Q - What if my student wants a course/class that is not offered through the Virtual School?
A - We currently offer courses that satisfy graduation requirements and meet the needs of most students in regards to the Core curriculum. Students who need higher-level courses that are not offered virtually are typically juniors or seniors. We encourage those students to pursue concurrent courses for dual credit. We have agreements with local colleges for reduced cost, and most of the courses are offered virtually as well.
Q - Are Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered?
A - Yes, some AP courses are available through Edgenuity. Students should contact the counseling office about these courses. AP courses are offered on an “as needed” basis. Additionally, some courses are offered in coordination with Tulsa Technology Center.
Q - Where do I go if I am having issues with my Chromebook?
A - Chromebook support is provided at the student’s home school. For example, Chromebook support is located on the West Campus for HS students.
Q - What if I need help with my class?
A - Students should contact their teacher of record to determine tutoring times or with specific content questions. Teachers can use a variety of methods to assist students, including email, Google Meet or Phone, direct assistance during office hours, and students are always welcome to come to Night School, where there will be a teacher available to assist students.
Q. - What if my child is on an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a 504?
A - Students with disabilities on a Section 504 Accommodation Plan or on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) can participate in virtual learning. Parents will need to meet (in-person or virtually) with their school’s team to determine which virtual program is the best placement for their student.
Q - If my child is part of the Gifted program, will they receive enrichment?
A - Students who are in the Gifted Program will have the opportunity for accelerated learning. Since virtual learning instruction makes one-on-one learning possible, the student may accelerate the pace of classes to meet their needs.
Q - Can students take Virtual elective courses?
A - Yes. Elective courses include but are not limited to Computer Applications, Health, Sociology, Psychology, and Career Planning. Edgenuity periodically updates and adds elective courses to its catalog.
Q - What if I do not finish my Virtual class by the due date?
A - Virtual classes are on the same academic calendar as all classes in OPS and will end prior to semester test dates (usually the last day of the week before semester exams). If a student has not completed the course, then the school will use the Relative Grade and post that as their final grade. It is the same as in a classroom setting, where if a student has work they have not finished, it will count against them. The student still receives a grade based on the work they completed minus the work they were supposed to complete.
Q - How is attendance taken for virtual students?
A - Students are expected to log in each school day and complete 30-60 minutes per course. If the student is ahead in the course, which is shown by a color code within the program or viewed by the parent on Progress Reports, then there is no penalty for not working on that course until they fall behind. District policies regarding non-attendance will be observed. Students who are inactive for several days may be withdrawn or receive a “no credit” for the course. All district policies regarding attendance appeals will be observed.
Q - What if my student is an English Language Learner?
A - Edgenuity has over 60 available language translations for courseware. Read aloud options include Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
Q - Can students transfer back to face-to-face learning at the school site?
A - Students who opt for virtual learning may only make a change at the beginning of the next semester.
Q - How will tests and exams be proctored if my student is full-time virtual?
A - If a student is full-time, then their courses are open. Their exams will not be proctored by a teacher unless the parent requests this, and then arrangements can be made with the Virtual Coordinator or their teacher of record.
Q - What else should I know before enrolling in Virtual School?
A - Virtual School requires students to be motivated and self-paced. Virtual classes are not a substitute for non-attendance. Bad habits can be magnified (procrastination, inattentiveness, academic dishonesty). Students can get behind quickly if they do not work. Without contact with the teacher of record, there could be a disconnect from the relationship with their teacher.
