Safety Terminology

I Love U Guys

The safety and security of students and staff is the top priority of Owasso Public Schools. The district uses a Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation, which is a non-profit organization founded in 2006.

The “I Love U Guys” Foundation was started by Ellen and John-Michael Keyes following a school shooting that took the life of their daughter, Emily. On that day Emily sent two text messages... One to her mother, Ellen, "I love u guys. K" and to her father, John-Michael, "I love you guys."

This SRP is used in over 50,000 schools, districts, departments, agencies, organizations and communities around the world and it has been implemented in schools in nearly every state across the country. It is action-based, flexible, and easy to learn. It rationally organizes tactics for response to weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to personal safety.

The SRP’s development is ever-evolving, created with extensive collaboration between experts such as first responders, public safety, school districts, and communities. Its tactics are data-driven, researched and based on experience and contemporary practices.

All students and staff annually receive training around this terminology, which is based on five actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. Below is a breakdown of each of the five actions, as well as examples of when those actions might be used.
