From the Desk of the Superintendent

Owasso Parents & Guardians,

As the school year draws to an end, I reflect on the experience with gratitude and appreciation — for your partnership, trust, and unwavering support. This year, our theme has been “Inspire,” and throughout the months, we’ve seen this theme personified. From classrooms filled with curiosity and creativity, to athletic fields, concerts, and community events bursting with talent and spirit, our students have been inspired — and inspiring.

But none of this would be possible without you. Your involvement, encouragement, and belief in your children have played a vital role in every success, big and small. Whether volunteering your time, supporting from the sidelines, or simply being a steady presence in your child’s learning journey, your impact has been deeply felt, and we thank you.

Continuous Strategic Improvement (CSI)

As we complete year two of our 5-year strategic plan, I’d like to update you on the progress we’ve made on the initiatives below. Detailed information regarding all initiatives can be found on our website.

Full-Day Pre-K

Committee members determined full-day Pre-K would meet a significant need for our youngest learners and their families, as it helps improve students’ school readiness, social development and academic outcomes. Currently, OPS does not have the space at each elementary school to offer full-day Pre-K. Our research found the best solution – both academically and financially – would be to change the grade configuration in all elementary schools from Pre-K - 5th grade to Pre-K - 4th grade. This plan would create space at every elementary for full-day Pre-K, elementary art, and enrollment growth. A 5th Grade Elementary Center would be constructed next to the 6th Grade Center – maintaining all of the elements of our traditional elementary schools, while bridging the transition to 6th grade.

Long-Range Facilities Master Plan

Our 10-15 year master plan includes strategic investments in our schools that enhance safety, update aging facilities, and create innovative learning environments for every student. As we plan for future school capital improvements, this comprehensive facilities plan provides a roadmap for district needs. Current capital projects underway include:

  • Renovations at Hodson Elementary include adding a new cafetorium tornado-safe space, new roof and additional classroom space.

  • Upgrades to HVAC systems across multiple campuses for improved energy efficiency and comfort.

  • Technology enhancements that support modern teaching and learning.

  • New roofs for Ator Elementary and the 7th Grade Center.

Capital Improvement Plan (Bond 2025)

Although the facility improvement election this spring was not successful, we’ve received more than 16,617 points of engagement through meetings and surveys about how the package can be improved. We’ve listened to your input and made revisions that reflect what matters most to Owasso residents. We plan to move forward this fall with a new proposal that meets the needs of our students without increasing taxes for local residents. We’ll be asking voters to invest in critical improvements in the areas of safety, academics, athletics and the arts, including many of the important projects that were proposed earlier this year. There’s still work ahead, but I feel confident about our direction because we’re moving towards it together.

Safe and Nurturing Environment

We are excited to inform you that our Safety and Security department received an Opioid Abatement Grant, which allowed us to hire an additional Registered Nurse to provide curriculum on the hazards of opioid use.

Additionally, we are thrilled to share the success of our therapy dog pilot program at Ram Academy, Barnes Elementary, and Northeast Elementary. The presence of our trained therapy dogs has had a remarkable impact on students, fostering a sense of calm, improving emotional well-being, and enhancing overall school engagement. Teachers have reported positive changes in student behavior, increased motivation, and a more supportive classroom environment. We are proud of the results and grateful for your continued support as we explore expanding this initiative.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our school community. We wish you and your family a safe, restful, and joyful summer. We look forward to welcoming you back for another year full of opportunities to grow, connect, and inspire.

Warmest Regards,

Dr. Margaret Coates
