Owasso High School Student Council Earns National Award

OWASSO – For its exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community, the Owasso High School student council has been recognized as a 2026 National Council of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC). The NASC program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

The Owasso High School Student Council has made a meaningful impact through both service and leadership. This year, they raised over $6,000 for St. Francis Children’s Hospital, organized a toy drive, and are planning a summer hygiene drive to support children in need. Members have also volunteered at a food bank in Oklahoma City and participated in mental health workshops in Yukon to better support their peers. In addition, they attended state and national leadership conferences and played a key role in building school spirit by leading the student section at events.

“The student council at Owasso High School just pulled off something extraordinary,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “Their student-driven change has earned them national recognition as a National Council of Excellence, proving that when young people are given the chance to lead, they turn their vision into real-world impact.”

“This award means a lot for us to receive and it recognizes all the effort and teamwork our council has poured into the school," said Student Council President Kiersten Fleming.

A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.
