OPS Summer Update

May 28, 2021

Owasso Parents & Guardians,

I hope this message finds you well and that your students have enjoyed the first days of summer vacation! It was a joy to see students take part in many end of the year activities during recent weeks. After missing out on those activities a year ago, it was evident that there was a feeling of gratitude among both students and staff to be able to have closure on the 2020-21 school year.

Now that the 2020-21 school year is complete, many have begun to ask questions about what school will look like in August as we open the 2021-22 term. Among those questions, one that we have heard frequently is: “Will masks be required next year?”

Beginning with summer school and summer activities, masks in Owasso Public Schools will be optional both at school buildings and on school buses. It is our desire for masks to continue to be optional for the start of the 2021-22 fall semester should the situation surrounding COVID-19 in our community continue to improve and stabilize as it has to this point.

When we review building procedures with principals in the coming weeks, we will use a critical eye to consider language in light of COVID-19. We know that some safety and cleaning protocols used during the 2020-21 school year proved to be very helpful and supported an optimal environment for students. Procedures will continue to be generally consistent across elementary schools, across middle level schools, and throughout the high school campuses, but may not return to the exact form they were before the pandemic began. We say “generally consistent” because certain procedures could be unique to a building based on factors such as the layout of the building, traffic flow, etc.

As we shared previously, Owasso Public Schools will offer two options for your child’s education in 2021-22:

  • If you prefer a virtual learning option for your child, you will have the opportunity to choose that option from July 6-July 23. Detailed sign-up information and expectations for virtual learning will be shared with parents and available on the district website prior to July 6.
  • If you prefer for your child to learn in-person for the 2021-22 school year, you do not need to complete any additional steps in July. All you need to do is complete the Infosnap registration process that was emailed to parents in April.

Please continue to check your email or the district website, owassops.org, throughout the summer for updates and important reminders as we get closer to the start of school in August. Should you have questions in the meantime, please reach out to us at the Education Service Center (918-272-5367 or webmaster@owassops.org).

Respectfully,

Amy Fichtner

Superintendent
